Hi everybody I have Xubuntu 7.04 32 bits and 64 bits

by default my 32 bist version only used 64 MB Ram and the 64 bits use 142 MB
Ram.

Here is my question this mean 64 bits is going to used more RAM that 32 bits
for the same aplications ?

Thank you for any help or reference

I don't know the inner workings of the applications or how they manage
memory but logically in my mind I would think that a 64-bit version of an
application will require more ram in some shape or form if for nothing else
than memory addressing now taking twice as much space, so if data/memory is
managed in some variation of a linked list implementation then the pointers
to the next object will take twice as much space in memory to keep track of
per struct/record/data segment.

Just a thought .... I could be wrong, so don't take what I have said to be
fact but that is just the explanation that makes sense to me that
automatically came to mind when I read the question.

How to upgrade from Edgy to Feisty? I already have a Desktop CD ready.

sudo apt-cdrom add
gksudo mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list [then replace all edgy to feisty, right?]
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade

am i doing the right thing? coz i am still prompted to download a few hunderd megabytes!

As far as I know, you can only do a dist-upgrade from the alternate install
disk. If you are using the alternate install disk, you may still be prompted
to download files, because the disk only has updates for the programs that
come with the regular install, not for the programs that you installed by
yourself.

Please take a look at this site for instructions on how to update via the CD
(scroll to the bottom):

I don't personally recommend upgrading from the cd-rom if the machine has
had any applications installed since the original installation because you
will end up with unmet dependencies which will either require a download
anyways or will ultimately break things.

I just resort to updating through the cdrom due to network unreliabilility. I can see that the upgrading with internet connection is inevitable; I think I can deal with that as long as the downloading size will be less than the install cd.

I found this:

I think the second method described in the reply to that command would work
for you, this just skips the step of changing all "edgy"s to "feisty". This
means that all you base packages are upgraded to the Feisty versions but
everything that is not on the default CD will still be at their Edgy
versions (if you were to do a fresh install from the CD you would also have
lots of updates I guess).

I'm not so sure whether this would be totally safe, so I guess an internet
update would be safest.

At all times, this is *NOT RECOMMENDED*! I'm not so sure how you would go
about upgrading from a CD, but the recommended way for normal updating
(which I suppose is what you'll be doing assuming from the few hundred
megabytes) is to run (Alt+F2) the command gksu "update-manager -c -d"
